Leadership Coaching: Employee Engagement In Times Of Financial Crisis

Many studies have indicated the close connection between employee engagement and

the performance of the organization in terms of returns, profit, quality and retention. Employee productivity and engagement are also essential factors to consider especially during this time of economic turmoil. The time of a recession is a trying time but it is apt for the company to perceive such a difficult time to increase the level of employee engagement. Difficult times will encourage employees to be more involved and engaged in what they do because of the fear of losing their jobs. Companies often experience problems with costs and funds and resort to retrenchment.

Employee productivity and cooperation, just like their involvement have something to do with contentment, actual results, and encouragement. The situation of the economy influences this condition of employee engagement. Even when the turn of events cannot be predicted, employees can be assisted to internalize any plans which in the long run will influence their job satisfaction. A good connection between the management and the workforce will help the company survive challenging times.

Boosting Employee Engagement

Worker effectiveness and productivity during the current economic situation is influenced by the fear of losing the jobs due to cost cutting measures the company is implementing. Employees might soon find themselves working with limited materials. In the same way, employees' level of motivation will be affected, and the company, in turn, can make use of the opportunity to boost the workers' engagement.

The management will know more about the concerns of its employees by listening to their complaints and views. Communication is important. Open and honest communication will make sure that employees understand what is happening to the company and to which direction it is headed. The management can then solicit the engagement of employees on matters that concern both parties.

What The Management Can Do

Those in management can tap people in the lower ranks who could directly talk and influence subordinates. Teams might even be created within the organization which would encourage employees to be more responsive and engaged.

This time of fiscal crisis calls for more aggressive action from managers but the sole responsibility does not belong to them. As always, it's the people who are important to the company's survival, especially those that are working directly. The future is not only an undertaking that the management will want to get to and accomplish, but it rests the shoulders of all people concerned from top to bottom.
