Leadership Development, A Critical Component In Family Business Success

Every expert says that leadership and business management are the key competencies of 21st Century business leaders

.

By that I mean every expert that is selling leadership and business management training.

Since they are selling it, does that make them an expert or does it make their self-serving assertions about the important of leadership training untrue? Both? Or neither?

Leadership and business management training certainly seems to be a key element for the legendary success of the mega corporations where the leader is the person everyone is willing to follow into uncharted territory and stick with against all odds.

That seems to be the organization's inevitable secret of success, their willingness to take on the metaphorical San Juan Hill that has been pointed out to them by their leader.

Just as there are legendary success stories attributed to the followers of influential leaders, there have also been some tragic failures. Tragic to the employees who followed and to the stockholders who lost their investment.

When some of these charismatic leaders have so publicly lead their followers (and the media) over a cliff like so many lemmings, perhaps more should have been required than the ability to convince others that they had the right to lead them and the direction they were going was the right one.

Perhaps leadership and business management training would have helped these leaders take their followers and their organizations in the direction it would have been more profitable for them to go.

But since it was the shareholders money and since the leader had the support of the media and in many cases the politicians - their actual failure to lead is often swept under the rug.

By contrast the owners of family businesses, the vast majority of those companies in existence today, spend, invest, and lose their own money - not that of a nameless stockholder.

About ninety percent of all companies have less than 200 employees so everybody knows everybody and virtually everything that is going on. When these business owners say they are "betting the farm" or this or that strategy - they literally mean it.

The family owned companies who survive through and beyond the founder's generation need leaders who are managers more than the mega companies because the very jobs, futures, and potential fortunes of everyone in the organization and in some cases the community are dependent on them.

For these companies management leadership training combines the how to do the job, something that is known at least historically because the organization is still in business, with why do it in the first place.

Managers who are also leaders understand that doing a job right is important but perhaps not as important as doing the right job right.

Management leadership training when learned well and executed excellently insures that the right jobs are done right.
