Leadership Effectiveness...beware Of These Pitfalls

When you are a leader, it is your constant effort to make sure you improve as a leader

. Consciously or not, whatever you do or intend to do makes you think whether it will be good for your leadership to do so. However, unknowingly, many leaders do certain things that become detrimental to them. Leadership coaching experts tell leaders to beware of such things, even though they might happen unknowingly. The following are some of these things that might happen.

1. You do not give too much importance or do not put in too much effort into the realization of your goals. This is a very dangerous thing you do. Once you have set a goal, your team and many other people look forward to its accomplishment. As a leader, the onus is upon you to fulfill these goals, to motivate your team to make things happen. So, once set a goal, stick to it. And, set only those goals which you are reasonably convinced you will be able to achieve.

2. You take your core values lightly. This is again precarious territory. If you don't abide by the core values you have set, no one else will. You are the protector of these core values, and they are really important to you because they define who you are.

There are things that might happen in your team which are not in the best interests of progress. One mistake many leaders make is that they take such things for granted. This should not happen. You have to tackle issues that deter progress, however insurmountable they might seem.

3. You get intimidated too much and then you let things go. This is wrong again; something that is totally uncalled for in effective leadership. Leadership coaching experts speak emphatically about how leaders should overcome their fears and ride the wave all the time.

4. You get tired and then you tend to give up. This is absolutely unbecoming of a leader too. Other than getting tired yourself, you have to encourage your team to go on forward. You are their inspiring and motivating force.

These are the things that effective leadership coaching experts tell that you should emulate. Perhaps your personality right now is totally different; perhaps it will take a lot of time for you to get there. But, begin the ascent. Maybe you have made too many compromises in your leadership so far; it is time to rectify those and go ahead.

To personally assess where you stand with these 4 traits, try this. Describe the pain, i.e. what you have given up or what you are settling for less than you want...in these traits.

If you want to avoid these pitfalls, then an honest personal self assessment is a great first step.
