Leadership Either Hope or Despair

Leadership can be a source of people's fear will it help or destroy the society they live in? This is the problem that every society faces. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that, "A good leader can't get too far ahead of his followers." A leader may be in question when the people become restless. It may seem that the problems aren't addressed well and the leader may go beyond his league that the people don't view him with that respect anymore.

This is the trouble with leadership. It can swing both ways either as a hope for a nation or community, or despair to its people. The way people view their leader determines the overall performance in terms of economic, political, social, and psychological change in a given community. Roosevelt's quote ties in by saying that a leader should maintain equality among his followers, and not engage in personal affairs.

Some leaders, especially authoritarian ones, go beyond this ideal and state that they are doing the nation or community good. They stand out from the crowd, going so far as to punish even one opposing voice. When a leader reaches this point, the whole nation or community is compromised, ultimately defeating the dignified role of that leader.

Warren Bennis emphasizes good leadership by saying, "Good leaders make people feel that they're at the very heart of things, not at the periphery. Everyone feels that he or she makes a difference to the success of the organization. When that happens people feel centered and that gives their work meaning."

When a leader removes freedom from his followers, he only breeds hate and tension. This contradicts the pristine values of leadership which entails service to the people. Leaders who abuse their powers are no worse than leaders who prevent freedom. This injustice has existed in human history for so long and it continues to plague society.

As another saying goes, "leadership is like silver or lightning in the dark sky." It exemplifies that leadership is a sought for ideal that anyone wants because of the authority and position it comes with. If not treated properly, though, leadership can be a dangerous weapon. Leadership is either hope or despair
