Leadership Skills - Leading By Example

For most people, leadership skills do not come naturally

. Though there are some people that innately understand what needs to be done, and the best way to do it, they are certainly the minority. It used to be that if you did not show these natural tendencies, you were not able to achieve certain levels of success. We believe that everyone can be taught the skills necessary to move forward in their careers. Training, patience and persistence can help people evolve into the effective leader they have always wanted to be. Leadership is not a position so much as it is a state of mind.

It's about understanding what needs to be done to make a difference and to have the courage to act on that understanding. Basic leadership skills capitalize on strengths and work to minimize weaknesses. When people are at their personal best, others follow them. They are successful and often charismatic, inspiring those around them to become proactive at problem solving and taking the initiative. Successful leaders understand that to instill confidence and gain trust, they must truly lead, rather than manage. This includes challenging the status quo. Making changes to improve processes and change organizational direction is not an easy task.

If the business wants to grow, there must be leaders that promote that growth. For supervisors and managers, leadership skills include learning to effectively share the company's vision for the future and outline the plan to get there. Perspectives are challenged and innovation occurs. Successful leaders understand how to delegate and to empower those around them. This builds trust and the confidence to do what is necessary. Many outdated ideas about leadership tout the advantage of structured hierarchical organizations. Many of today's strongest leaders upend this theory. Teamwork, rather than directives, brings people together to collaborate to achieve their goals.

Leadership skills include setting the example, in actions as well as words. This paves the way for others to follow. Behaving in a way that is consistent with the message and goals will build support. When one person wins, everybody wins. Even though many projects and goals are achieved through teamwork, acknowledging individual accomplishments and contributions renews commitment. Celebrating these small milestones continuously reinvigorates and inspires team members. They begin to outperform other teams and become the next generation of successful leaders. Teams with this type of leadership raise the bar and encourage success.
