Learning About A Homeschool Curriculum
There has been quite a bit of news lately concerning the accomplishment of individuals who received home schooling
. They are taught at home, by a parent or guardian, and are usually taught in a different way than those in the traditional school. Regardless of the manner of teaching, there is a certain Homeschool Curriculum that must be followed under education laws.
Home teaching is done for different reasons. There are a number of places where the remote locations offer no other recourse. This is especially noticeable in locations such as Australia where some of the ranches are too far from a school for the children to attend. In this case, the majority have the advantage of online instruction from a regular teacher, supervised by the parents. However, the a large number of countries do not have this option.
There are various online schools that offer this instruction and guidance for the home school parent, in the United States, but it appears that the majority prefer to go it on their own, adjusting teaching the various subjects to the grade requirements and their child's abilities. Each state has various rules for those who wish to follow this method of educating their children. Basically, they are as follows.
1. The parent or guardian must notify the school district, local school superintendent or private school, that participates in this type of program, before or after the start of school, according to the state's laws.
2. The above participants must be informed of the age of the child or children involved (compulsory age in most states is 6 through 16 or 18).
3. Most states do not require teaching certification, however the parent or guardian must speak English.
4. The majority of states require that the person teaching have an income from another source, such as a spouse.
There are a number of sites on the Internet that offer complete curriculum packages with books, tests and specific instructions in everything from kindergarten to high school subjects. Most states require periodic examinations to determine a child's progress when they are being instructed in this manner. Typically, it has been found that students taught in this manner score above average in these tests.
The majority of the states have Core Academic Standards, which must be followed by homeschoolers. These standards are developed by their State Board of Education and designate the skills the students must master at certain points in their education. With modern technology, many also list these standards on the Internet for the parent or guardian to follow.
Homeschool Curriculum is closely linked to the regular classroom in basic subjects, however there is the opportunity to go beyond these basics and explore other possibilities. In many school districts the homeschoolers are able to participate in some of the school activities and expand their social life and even participate in competitions such as spelling bees. Many parents and guardians feel this is a way to give their child a sound education that is beyond the norm.
