Step 1

Leash Training: Getting him to adjust to the collar

This is the first step to start with as soon as your pooch gets to his new home. Putting the collar for the first time on your puppy, he will probably resist it for few hours that it's on, but it does not mean you should take it off, No! It will take him time to get use to it and before you know it will feel nature to him whenever he wears it. A simple light weight leather collar is best bet for this training.

Step 2

Leash Training: Getting him to Leash

Once your puppy is happy wearing his new collar, show him the leash before attaching it to his collar so to get him comfortable with leash and not to be afraid. All you need to do is clip the leash to his collar and let him run around the house with leash dragging behind him under your supervision. He will forget about it after a while, take it off after some few minutes then repeat the same process. Place the leash on him whenever he wants to eat or right by the side of his food plate before you attach it to him.

Once your pooch is comfortable with his leash, pick the end of the leash and follow him around inside the house for several minutes and when he his used with the leash on him around, repeat the process and do not apply pressure to his collar as this may cause your puppy to be scared and always praise or reward him.

Step 3

Leash Training: Taking Him for a Walk

Now that your puppy is used with his leash on him walking around in the house, it is time to take your pooch for a walk outside. It is important that your pet is calm so give him the sit-stay command before clipping his leash on his collar. It is important that your puppy should learn that pulling on leash will lead him nowhere and NEVER follow your puppy when he pulls on his leash. When you follow, you are tell him that he his the leader of the "pack", so when do does pull, quickly halt and give him a "Stop" command and let him know that he has to be by your side on a loose leash.
