Led Tv : Better Technology, Better Viewing Experience

LED is the acronym for Light Emitting Diode

LED is the acronym for Light Emitting Diode. In everyday life, you can see a number of electronic equipments that make use of LED displays, like the caller ID identifier on your landline telephone instrument. The rapid advancement in the display technologies has ushered in an era of modern LED TV which is widely believed to give a superior viewing experience than any of the other previous technologies related to TV and large displays.

Before we discuss the LED TV in further detail, let us first briefly understand what this technology is all about? The LED is a small semiconductor which gets charged up when the electricity is passed through it and the excited electrons give out light of single wavelength. That does not mean that only one light will be given out. Actually, multiple colour lights can be generated depending upon what material is used for making the tips of the probes through which the light passes. These Light Emitting Diodes are used for the backlighting purposes in a flat panel LED TV, in vogue currently. These are far better than the old fluorescent lamps which were earlier used for backlighting purposes.

These TVs come in two types of variants. One is the Edge-lit type. In this, the edges of the TVs are more brightly lit than the centre and the TVs are generally slim or of lesser width. The other type is the Full-array. In this, the whole screen is uniformly lit. The only drawback is that the TV is not slim. It has a thicker pack as compared with the Edge-lit type.

Some people consider LED TV to be different and better from the LCD TV. What they do not know is that the only difference lies in the backlighting device being used. And, this produces the difference in the viewing quality of the pictures. Therefore, in reality, it is the same old liquid crystal display technology based TV that makes use of light emitting diodes to give you a better viewing experience. Naturally, you would be interested to know in which aspects it scores over the LCD technology.

Contrast Ratio is better for LEDs. This means that these TVs produce better colour differentiations on the screen. Also, if you were to view the TV from the sides, the LED ones will be able to give better contrast ratio than the LCD ones. These are available in bigger sizes than the LCD TVs. You can find these in sizes ranging from 40-odd inches to about 80 inches in width. There is no blurring of images or motion lags while viewing the fast paced videos.

The only major downside of the LED TV is their power consumption which is higher than the LCD based TVs. But, their superior viewing experience fades away this shortcoming.

It has to be understood that the LED is an improvement over the LCD technology. It is not its substitute, but an evolution from it. Some of the devices make use of both these technologies for different uses.
