Turning the skateboard requires little technique which is adding more weight to your heels. You may not able to do this at first but do exactly what you are told to do. This is very important part and once you learn to turn the skateboard you will learn to make sharper turn. To make sharper turn you have to lift the front wheels as briefly as possible. Then point the direction during that short lift to where you want to head.

Now lets talk about how to stop when you moving on a skateboard. Basically there are two ways to do stop the board. One is by grinding the tail end of the skateboard on the ground. This is not recommended because eventually the skateboard will start to wear down. The second option to stop the moving skateboard is by making a reverse push. You do this by stopping the front foot and then pushing it in the opposite direction.
