So you understand that you are broken up. It doesn't seem like you guys are getting back together any time soon. But you still have hope that someday you can work it out. So how do you get there if you walk away?

Some people think you can win your ex back by being friends. Others think this is the wrong route because you can never be friends with someone you have been intimate with. You, as their friend have set yourself up to watch as they move on in their lives, date, and maybe even fall in love. In order to keep the friendship, you have to be supportive, and if they are happy, you should be happy for them. This is a very difficult if you are still in love. You may believe that continuing to see them is better if you are going to win your ex back, but it can be argued that you will be left with more resentment and hurt feelings this way.

If you and your ex are the type of people who really can be friends after a breakup, you may make it impossible to ever get back together. Being "just friends" takes the option of a love affair off the table. If you agree to this, regardless of your own motives, your ex may see this as a contractual agreement. That is, you will never win your ex back because the conditions of being in touch is that you are "just friends." Attempting anything more would be a breach and you are likely to be cut off entirely.

To be able to reconcile, give each other time and space. If you chose to continue to see each other, it's better to agree on casual dating, than being "just friends." Casual dating has a different intent and may set you on a better footing to win your ex back.
