Aside from nitpicking, you should also take the time to comb the hair of your child using a nits comb. Do this after using an anti lice shampoo, as there may still be some nits that remain.

Lice smothering can be a good home remedy, as well, to rid lice. Popular choices that can be used to smother lice include olive oil, Vaseline and mayonnaise. If you prefer one of these treatments, make sure to leave it on the hair of your child overnight and cover it with a shower cap. Wash the hair the following day, using normal shampoo or vinegar, and comb it using a metal nits comb to get rid of the dead lice and nits that were unglued from the hair shaft.

There are some herbal remedies that can be helpful when you are trying to rid lice. These herbal remedies may include tea tree oil and other essential oils. Parents can also use Ulesfia, which is not a pesticide prescription, to rid lice. Ulesfia is safe to use on kids aged 6 months and older. When using Ulesfia, make sure to wash it off after 10 minutes and repeat the same procedure after 7 days until the lice are completely eliminated. Ulesfia works by blocking the respiratory system of the lice, which results in suffocation.

As much as possible, avoid using over-the-counter or other commercial products that contain harsh chemicals. These may cause an allergic reaction in your child. Regarding home remedies, even if they are all natural, make sure to consult with your physician first before starting with a treatment. These can also be harsh to the fragile scalp of a child. Aside from that, mayonnaise may not be recommended by your physician. Mayonnaise may spoil overnight and, by accident, a child may get it on their fingers and put their fingers in their mouth. So, to avoid any risks, make sure to get good advice from your physician on how you can rid lice in a safe and effective way.
