Life Coaching As A Home Based Business
Life Coaching has become more and more popular for people
, women especially, who wish to create the ideal lifestyle they dream of.
We want more time, more money, more freedom, but wonder how we can achieve it when the bills need to get paid and the regular wage takes care of things.
As a life coach the transition from work to home based business was important to me. I was aware of the many types of businesses I could enter, but life coaching appealled to me because it looked like it provided flexibility, the chance to help people, a pathway for my personal development and was inexpensive to start.
The first thing I did was plan out what I needed. The list was surprisingly short - a laptop, a mobile phone, a message bank, and some training.
I did develop business cards and stationary, and that helped, but what made the most difference was me making the effort to meet people and let them know what I was doing. Word of mouth was great in that first year.
Next I started training. I wanted and needed a part time option where there were flexible hours, helpful support and accreditation. I trained in life coaching and NLP skills so I knew I had all I needed to be helpful to my clients.
Then I got to work on building my website. I wanted a website that would bring clients to me, rather than me having to go and find them, as I was short on time.
The website design meant that I captured leads who were interested in life coaching and personal development. They appreciated the information I sent them on how to be the best version of themselves they could be and I got to be connected easily to the types of people who would hire a life coach.
Finally, I kept building my skills both as a life coach and as a marketer. I didn't realise in the beginning that 80% of my time would need to be on marketing. I just thought if I could just coach all day, I'd be happy! It's not as easy as that, I discovered. The best coach in the world won't succeed unless people know you exist, so I had to make sure people could find me.
It took 12 months for me to start earning a full time income, and that was doing it part time whilst I studied at university and studied my life coaching course and NLP.
Year two I turned over $250,000 in my business and I didn't look back after that.
Yes, I learned how to run a business, but I really learned how to lead myself and be the best me I could be. The wins far outweighed the challenges.
And yes, I think it takes a certain type of person to succeed at this. I learned to be open, curious, willing to learn and able to take on a challenge. I didn't have these qualities when I started out, so I'm forever grateful for what life coaching has taught me.
