There is something about lighthouses which draw people to them

. That is why they are one of the most visited places by tourists. Lighthouses, by their very nature, bring out the image of safety from danger, of a constant shelter, a helping hand, and security. For many, lighthouses are religious symbols for light in the midst of darkness, someone watching over us, and a guiding refuge from the storms of life. Their rotating beacon can remind us that all is going to be okay.

Yet each one is unique. There are red ones and white ones. There are ones made from stone and ones from wood. Most sit on cliffs high above the ocean and can be seen for miles. They warn of danger, guide lost sailors through the fog to the harbor, and act as watch out posts to protect our shores.

The pure symbolic nature of lighthouses make them popular subjects for artists. In the olden days, it was not uncommon to see a rendition of one in a sailor's home. It reminded the loved ones that their seafarer had a way back home. For the sailor returned from the sea, it meant his family watched for him when he was away. Lighthouses symbolize unfailing love.

Today, anyone can have a picture of a lighthouse in their home. Some people collect small memorabilia like snow globes, statues and tea cups with lighthouses painted on them. But one way to bring the peaceful tranquility, constancy and beckoning presence of a lighthouse into your home is through photography.
