History
Peerless was established 1892 in Chicago as a joint project by three immigrant brothers, each one of them being an inventor with at least 50 patents among the three of them. The early Peerless at first manufactured items derived from said brothers patents, but soon expanded itself to operations in Chicago, New York, St. Louis, and San Francisco.
In the 1950s, Samuel Herst, a son of one of the founders of Peerless, had reorganized the company following the Depression, and had just successfully acquired a patent in a flourescnet luminaire for use in classrooms, the first of its kind during that time. This event triggered the extensive implementation of indirect lighting techniques for establishments in both the education and business sectors.
During 1965, Doug Herst, Samuels son, joined Peerless and was responsible in the development of luminaires based off modern architecture of that time. These luminaires sported simple, practical designs which immediately became a favorite among engineers and architects alike. These events thus spearheaded the development of indirect lighting technologies.
A young engineer by the name of Peter Ngai joined the ever growing Peerless in 1976 and was tasked in the overseeing of the products quality and performance. This act if Peters, coupled with his extensive knowledge of the physics of light itself, soon became the basis to Peerless motto being lighting for people.
By 1999 Acuity Brands, Inc. had acquired Peerless, allowing for the further expansion of Peerless in the realms of research and development in todays architectural lighting technologies. As of 2005, having transferred its manufacturing facilities from California to Indiana and Mexico, Peerless has since held true to its quest in designing and manufacturing lighting solutions for its clients.
