LED stands for light-emitting diodes. LED lights were only discovered in the early 20th Century. Oleg Losev, a Russian researcher who was also a radio technician, observed during a radio transmission that light is emitted through the diodes when electricity passes through them. However, Losev did not gain any notoriety from his discovery and no further research was conducted. Decades later in 1970, Nick Holonayk, who is now known as the father of LEDs, conducted his own research. Holonayk is credited as the first person to have increased LED brightness. He was also able to create colored LED lights in hues of yellow and red.
Following Holonayk's successes, others began to research LEDs and improved upon the development of LED technology. As a result, LED lights became a great deal brighter and more varieties of LED colors were developed. Due to the research and development into LED since its discovery, more and more commercial uses have been found for it. One reason why LED lighting has grown in popularity is that it is very energy efficient and long lasting. As such, LED lights have come to replace incandescent lighting in most commercial locations and in homes and offices. These lights not only last longer than incandescent lights, but they also emit more light, are smaller in size, are more durable and reliable, and have faster switching.
LED lights can be used as a light source in place of most traditionally used light sources. Lighting in cars and traffic signals are two common examples where LED can be used. Some airplane manufacturers have also begun using LED lighting. LED lights are unique in that they can emit light in a specific color without actually using color filters, unlike most other types of lighting methods. LED-based lights can also turn on and off very quickly, so you don't need to wait too long for a light to come on when you've flipped the switch. This is a far different experience than fluorescent light bulbs, which take some time to awaken the light after turning on the light switch. LEDs can also be dimmed, making them even more versatile.
Another great advantage of LED lights is the fact that they do not radiate a lot of heat, which means that you can easily avoid burning yourself if you touch the light. You can also avoid damage to any nearby sensitive object or to fabrics. In addition, while most other light sources abruptly burn out all of a sudden, LEDs die by dimming slowly over time so you have plenty of advanced notice that you need to replace it. The main disadvantage to LED lights is the cost. Initially, LEDs cost more than traditional lighting. However, since LEDs have a longer life than traditional lighting sources, you will likely benefit financially in the long run.
There are many ways to make use of LED lights, as they are truly versatile, especially due to their compact size. Look around your world and you will likely find that LED is the lighting source for most applications, whether it is the lightbar on the police car you drove by, the headlights in your car, or the screen on your computer.
