Liposuction Can Be Done To Remove Extra Fat, But It Can't Remove Feelings Of Self-consciousness

Maybe you've heard that cosmetic surgeries can improve a person's appearance

. By removing blemishes or shaping a person's facial features, or through other means, a person can take the things that they don't like about themselves and make them better. Liposuction is one surgery that is especially sought-after. But does having it done really make everything better?

Sometimes it feels like if just one thing was improved in our lives, it would somehow have a ripple effect that would make everything else in our lives better. Many people feel this way about what they consider to be physical imperfections.

Certainly everyone goes through a stage of disliking their own body. It's hard not to feel unhappy at least somewhat during the tumultuous adolescent years, and nobody can really blame fourteen-year-olds for feeling self-conscious about a few things.

This inevitable stage seems to pass relatively quickly for most boys, but it seems to linger on indefinitely for most girls. Some thirty- and forty-year-old women find themselves feeling much the same as they did at the age of fourteen. They look critically in the mirror and wish that they could fix a few of the flaws that come with aging. Wouldn't it be nice, for instance, if those hips could be just a little narrower like they used to be?

Thinking like this leads many women every year into the offices of liposuction surgeons. They ask very seriously if this problem or that problem can be fixed through the fat suction surgery. Those who are good candidates (such as those who are already within a healthy weight range and have no serious health problems) are consulted as to what changes they can expect from having the surgery done.

Liposuction is safest and smartest when only a small amount of fat is removed from an isolated area of the body. Some women, and a few men also, are satisfied that this small fat removal will significantly improve their appearance. For those who have been staring in the mirror day after day, it may seem like smoothing out that problem area will make all the difference in the world.

But does liposuction really make such a big difference? The best results are very aesthetically pleasing, it is true. A recipient of the surgery will often look very fit and sometimes younger than before. Realistic, that is what a person can expect.

Although satisfaction differs from person to person, it seems to be true across the board that people are more satisfied when they have realistic expectations about liposuction. Those who realize that the changes will be small and will mostly make clothing fit more attractively tend to be satisfied when the results start to show.

Those who mistakenly believe that liposuction will fix all of their problems tend to be disappointed when their life stays basically the same as it was before. They still have the same problems, the same stresses, and they still may have some insecurities about their bodies. It seems that some of us never quite get past the awkward stage of being fourteen years old and hating our bodies. Until we can, no surgery or anything else will satisfy our need for a perfect body.
