Liposuction Safety: The Last 25 Years

Although the impression of getting liposuction in Tampa is that the procedure has

been fully modernized and updated, the truth is that a recent study suggests that getting lipo isnt any safer now than it was 25 years ago. Liposuction methods have actually improved over this time period, and are now safer. Complication rates are no better because more practitioners lacking proper experience and training are performing liposuction procedures.

The Oversimplification of Lipo

Some locals who decide to get lipo in Tampa have the (inaccurate) idea, largely encouraged by popular media, that liposuction is an easy solution to weight loss. Since liposuction can be performed by any doctor, regardless of whether they have specific cosmetic surgery training, the availability of liposuction has also increased. This dangerous combination of easy availability and questionable qualifications has made liposuction seem like an immediate and complication-free fix for getting rid of extra pounds. In reality, liposuction is for finely sculpting the body of someone who is already in relatively good health and is at a stable weight.

The secondary problem arises when looking at the initial investment cost of setting up to perform liposuction. The equipment is not overly expensive, and the technical aspect of the procedure is straightforward enough to seem easy with just a weekend training course. Additionally, the procedure is popular to doctors and practices that may not be on a strong financial footing, since patients pay in cash rather than having the procedure covered by insurance. All these factors combined can lead an unscrupulous physician to view lipo as a low-risk potential cash cow.

Reducing Liposuction Risks

Although liposuction is inherently pretty low-risk, those risks increase when the procedure is performed by inexperienced physicians. Since lipo involves breaking up fat cells, one of the potential hazards of the procedures is fat cells being transported by open blood vessels to spots in the body like the heart or lungs where they may cause blockages.

Toxicity of local anesthetics is another danger. Surgeons inject a large amount of local anesthetic during the procedure, and sedatives may be administered intravenously without a trained anesthesiologist present. In fact, many of the reported injuries sustained during lipo were anesthetic complications like problems with intubation, airway obstruction and inadequate ventilation, and medication errors.

Buyer Beware

It is ultimately the patients responsibility to properly research both practitioner and clinic before committing to any procedure, no matter how simple it may seem. Ask about credentials, experience, anesthesia practices and clinic policies at your initial consultation, and dont move forward with the liposuction unless you feel confident that you're in good hands.
