Liposuction: What To Expect During Recovery
If you want to get rid of the last bit of stubborn fat on your body that refuses
to go away despite a good diet and regular exercise, you may be a good candidate for liposuction. This type of surgery can get rid of your excess fat, and many patients are happy with the outcome. However, it is helpful to know what to expect from the recovery period before you make your appointment.
You might want to ask for at least a week off work after liposuction, as it usually takes about that long for many people to feel good enough to leave the house. However, you will need to wear a compression garment around the location of the surgery to keep your new shape. Expect to wear this for at least a few weeks afterward.
You will likely be given pain medication by your doctor before you leave the operation, and will need to take it for at least the first few days of recovery. Therefore, you will need someone to drive you home from the surgery since you should not be driving directly after taking such medication.
You should ask friends or family to stay with you the first few days if possible, or at least check on you and drive you where you need to go. This will ensure that you are both safe and comfortable while you heal from the liposuction.
Though you will probably not be feeling great the first week of recovery, it is often important that you get up and walk around when possible. You do not need to take long walks, but it is usually helpful if you can walk around a little bit, just to get into the habit of moving again. Many doctors think that this can reduce the overall recovery period.
You will not see the final results for a few months. During this time, the swelling will go down significantly and you will be able to see how the liposuction shaped your body. Though the skin will be loose at first, it should tighten up after about six months. At that point, you will probably be quite glad that you went through this surgery, as you should see the results that you have always wanted. Just be sure to check back with your doctor at least once after the operation to make sure everything is healing as it should be.
