Its strength derives from the protein keratin, which also makes up the hair and nails. Some of the cells in the epidermis produce melanin, a substance that determines skin color and protects the skin from the sun. The epidermis contains a unique fatty substance that makes the skin waterproof. Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, a fibrous layer of tissue containing nerves, hair follicles, blood vessels and sweat glands.

The skin has number of key functions. It shields the internal organs of the body from infections and injury and is an important sensory organ, containing cells sensitive to hot and cold, pain, sunlight and pressure. The skin is vital for temperature control. If the body becomes too hot, blood vessels in the dermis dilate and sweat glands produce perspiration. If the body becomes too cold the blood vessels constrict, conserving heat. The skin also reacts to internal body states, for example, liver diseases make it turn yellow.

Collagen naturally breaks down and degrades with age, causing sagging, wrinkling and crepe-like appearance. Sun exposure greatly accelerates the process.
