Local Flavor: Stephen Burrows For Target Showcases East Harlem Style

Iconic fashion designer Stephen Burrowsfamous for helping define the outrageous decadence

and sensuality of 1970s disco style back in Studio 54 dayshas always drawn inspiration from his elite circle of friendsHalston, Andy Warhol, Cher, and now, Target.

Burrows created the line to mark the grand opening of the retail giants first Manhattan store in East Harlem on Sunday, July 25. Target has tailored the stores merchandise to reflect its multi-cultural neighborhood, and Burrows, as a legendary African-American designer, is the centerpiece of Targets Harlem Designer Collection.

Stephen Burrows for Target includes bright, summery knits that reflect the vibrant East Harlem culture. Each of the items (which range in price from $19.99-$34.99) is crafted with unexpected detailszippers, hoods, leopard-print flutter sleeves, and tiny strips of color blocking.

In addition to Burrows line, the collection includes clothing from Cuban-American design duo Isabel and Ruben Toledo (Isabel made the shift dress and jacket Michelle Obama wore to the presidential inauguration ceremony), and kitchen accessories from renowned Ethiopian-Swedish chef (and Top Chef Masters winner) Marcus Samuelsson.

In celebration of East Harlem, Target will donate 5 percent of the purchase of any items from Burrows line to the designers favorite charity, The Fund for Public Schools in support of the library at The Young Womens Leadership School of East Harlem.
