The basics

The MMA
As its very name suggests, this approach focusses on a range of disciplines and techniques.

The basic idea is to be flexible and to select from a range of disciplines, as required for a given situation. Each of the above arts has its own characteristics. For example, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is well-known for its fluidity, adaptability and its ability to overcome huge disadvantages in terms of weight and raw strength. By contrast, Muay Thai (sometimes called Thai Kickboxing) is an example of an effective striking sport.
Combing the two allows a practitioner to deploy the optimum strategy in any given situation where, for example, self-defense is required. Of course, MMA is now a major sport in its own right and subject to competition regulations etc.
Why study at all?
Different people may have different objectives in the study of MMA. Unfortunately, in our present day society the danger of attack, though hopefully rare, is always there. Inevitably, self-defense concerns are real and these techniques will offer the opportunity to better protect yourself should the need arise. Some enjoy the study for the increased self-awareness and self-confidence it generates. Their objectives may be driven more by a desire to show mastery over their bodies rather than a desire to improve their own personal safety.
