Looking Online For Credit Card Embosser Business

Sometime between midnight April 17 and 7:30 a.m

. April 18, one of two parking-pass-dispensing machines at the park was damaged and the electronic storage device stolen, taking with it 2 1/2 weeks of credit-card information, from transactions dating back to April 1 - Card Embosser .

Const. Julie Chanin of West Shore RCMP said the job would have required considerable effort. "But the park isn't being used at that time, so the person had all night to do what they had to do."

Parks Minister Barry Penner said credit-card data is withdrawn only twice a month in the off-season months when park use is down. Nonetheless, the theft has triggered a review of collection protocols for the province - Card Embossing Machine.

Penner was not able to say how many credit-card holders might be affected by the theft.

The RCMP is urging those who used their credit cards in the Goldstream parking lot from April 1-18 to cancel them immediately - Card tipper.

Last year, the province collected $830,770 in parking fees in provincial parks.

Penner was unable to provide the maintenance costs for the machines. Provincial parks are maintained by private operators who bid on park-maintenance contracts.

It's the first time police have responded to a call about parking-meter theft at Goldstream.

Catherine Tully, acting executive director for the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner, said machines that contain private information such as credit-card data must protect it using reasonable security arrangements under the Privacy Act.

The privacy commissioner is expected to look into whether B.C. Parks' current protocol satisfies that requirement.

Penner was unable to provide detailed information on what personal information the parking machine holds or whether it is encrypted, but believes the machine only collected credit-card numbers, not names, which would limit a criminal's ability to make purchases with them.
