Looking to buy cordless headphones?

Cordless headphones are a great addition to any home or office, and can be found to suit almost any budget. But before purchasing, you should take a look at the different types of headphones available:

Radio Frequency (RF) Cordless Headphones:

RF headphones operate on, you guessed it, radio waves. They come as a two-part device: the headphones themselves and a transmitter that gets plugged into the audio jack of the device you are listening to. This makes set up quite simple, just plug the transmitter in and listen. One big perk of RF cordless headphones is the range, which is 300+ feet in most devices. However, when used at longer ranges, RF headphones may pick up signals from cell phones, walkie-talkies or other electronic transmitters.

Infrared (IR) Cordless Headphones:

IR headphones operate by transmitting infrared frequency waves from a transmitter to the headphones. Like the RF models, IR cordless headphones are very simple to use: just plug in the transmitter and hit play. Expect a better overall sound quality with IR headphones, as there is generally very little interference at the IR wavelengths. One drawback is that you have to be in the same room as the transmitter to listenreceivea signal, as IR headphones are limited to about a 30 foot range. Furthermore, IR headphones are unable to penetrate walls or other barriers, forcing you to be in sight of the transmitting device.

Bluetooth Headphones:

Once just used for hands-free cell phone use, Bluetoothtechnologyhas made its way to the audio industry as well. Bluetooth headphones are different in that the audio device you are listening to must be equipped with bluetooth capabilities. If it is, you simply pair your cordless headphones with the device and enjoy. There is no need to plug a transmitter into the audio jack, as your device already has this transmitter built in. Bluetooth runs on radio frequencies, but has a much smaller range than traditional RF devices. This improves battery life for the headphones, but limits usage to some degree.

In the end, the decision really depends on your needs. If you need maximum mobility and range, RF cordless head phones are a clear winner. But if you will just be using the headphones for your living room, IR cordless headphones can offer improved sound quality. Bluetooth headphone are a great option, but only if the device you're using is equipped to handle it.
