Loving Your House Tools

I know you don't need some snobby writer telling you how to take care of your tools

. Maybe, maybe not. I'm willing to bet you might though. There are a few organizational tips that can be passed on to just about anyone and really help you with your tools.

Often the first step to taking care of your tools is knowing where to find them when you need to. This can sometimes be a serious challenge. No one ever seems to put tools back where they get them. And if you don't really have anywhere specific to keep them then your battle is lost before it even begins. Yeah, we're gonna help you out once more.

For household tools, someplace in the kitchen is a great idea. Nine times out of ten it's where household tools end up anyway, you might as well be pro-active on this. Often under the sink in a bucket is an option. I submit this is not a good idea unless you're fond of tetanus shots. Nope. A few hooks and you can turn your kitchen under the sink cabinet into a nice little place to hang some tools. Try to stay away from hanging chainsaws under there though. Just plain hand tools are good enough.

Another option is to mark the tool territory. Usually you can do this by simply installing dividers into the drawer where you normally keep your tools. This will discourage the odd thing being thrown into the drawer and upsetting the delicate balance you've established with your tools.

Keeping up with your tools is important but so is proper maintenance where your tools are concerned. Keeping your tools clean and in good repair goes beyond a personal choice, it's also about safety. Tools with chips or broken pieces can often lead to injury, so make sure if it's supposed to sharp it's sharp, if it's not, then it definitely shouldn't be. Even a slightly bent screw driver can be dangerous if it slips out of a screw.

Basic tools you how should be using are two hammers, a small and large one, a set of standard and Philips screwdrivers or a multi-driver and adjustable pliers. While other tools might be needed or even a little easier to use for certain jobs. These basics will get you through most crisis's you might be facing.

For smaller tools such as mini screw driver sets and mini-pliers try to keep these handy fellows hid away somewhere safe where no one else will find them. If you have kids, behind a book on the bookshelf would probably do well. The point is these types of items seem to walk away or get lost easily.

Remember taking care of your tools is an imperative, but being able to find them is every bit as important. Make sure that you know where your tools are at all times and enforce a "you take it, you bring it back" policy will go a long ways towards making sure you have what you need when you need it.
