In this age of Internet, we all have heard about modem, if not using it in our home. In fact, if you are reading this article on your computer at home, it probably arrived via modem. It is an important and integral part of Internet connectivity. So, what is a modem? Let's get some technical support to learn more about it. It'll help you in warding off various modem problems.

Basically a modem is a peripheral device used to transmit signals between two computers over the telephone system. A modem converts digital signals that PCs produce into analog signals, suitable for transmission over the telephone system. A digital signal is discrete whereas an analog system is continuous.

Although many of us extensively use Internet these days, but most of us hardly ever wonder how the connections are made, how we can so easily chat online with someone living in some other parts of the world. It's all because of the modem. Well, modem is the device without which we can't connect to the Internet.

Now let us discuss some of the technicalities of a modem. Modem is short form for MOdulator DEModulator, and is an electronic device. Since digital signals cannot travel in the telephone lines, we need something to convert the analog signals (telephone line) into digital signals (computer) and vice versa. Modem exactly does that.

Modems came into existence in the 1960s as a way to allow terminals to connect to computers over the phone lines. In the earlier days, modems were very slow (300 bits per second) and were called dial-up modems. In this system of Internet connection, the Internet and the telephone could not be used at the same time, hence things were slow. But with advancement of technology, faster modems came into existence. We saw the birth of broadband Internet.

Nowadays, we have DSL and ADSL modems. In a broadband connection, both the Internet connection and the telephone system can be used at the same time. In case of DSL (digital subscriber line), both the upload and download speed of the Internet connection is the same. On the other hand, in ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line), download speed is greater than the upload speed. These modems have a speed of upto 8 Megabytes per second, which is really fast.

So the broadband revolution is the secret to the success of the Internet. And as they say, the world is becoming smaller and smaller, modem plays a significant part in this revolution.
