MOTIVATION Get It – Keep It
MOTIVATION Get It Keep It Its the time of year that everyone is talking about resolutions
, goal setting and getting motivated. We all have lofty goals, but only 3% of us will come close to attaining those goals in the upcoming year. How do successful people get motivated and stay motivated? First - they set goals in writing. Not only do they set goals for personal success, they write down all of the steps necessary to achieve those goals. They also spend time identifying possible obstacles that will need to be overcome and document those as well. Each goal has a time line associated with it and the incremental steps are time bound as well. Second -successful people review their goals daily. Daily review keeps the focus on what needs to be done to get to the finish line. At predetermined intervals, weekly or monthly, the people that are most successful review their goals. They spend time looking at the incremental steps and the time line to make sure they are where they need to be are and make any adjustments necessary in the steps without changing the final goal. By measuring regularly, you also recommit to your goals. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds in two months, you start by stating the weight you will be two months from now and nail it down with a date. Some of the incremental steps will require evaluation of your current exercise, activity level and the food you eat. Can you get there by increasing your activity? You may also need to examine your eating habits. Are there places where you can make better choices on what you eat knowing that you will feel better immediately by making good choices? The results will show in the long run and you will feel great when you accomplish your weight goal at the end of the two months. Do you need to increase your activity and make better food choices? All of these incremental steps need to be documented so you can refer to them as often as necessary. Third successful people visualize the goal. They visualize frequently about how they will feel or look. They start living as though they have already reached their goal. For weight loss, they visualize how they will look in a new outfit. They hear friends and family commenting on how good you look. Yes, they can hear what people will be saying. Visualization reinforces why this goal is important to you personally, and is a great motivator to stay committed to the smaller, more tedious steps. Visualization works for any goal financial freedom, improved relationships, smoking cessation, or running a marathon. The goal is not as important as the steps to make it a reality Fourth successful people re-wire their thinking. Positive thinking probably should have been first, because it really is the key to success. The 3% of people that always stay motivated to meet their goals affirm their power to control themselves in the environment. While setting goals, they also identified many of the challenges they may be faced with in achieving the goals. When you know what the obstacles are, you already know how to get around them run around, jump over, or slide under. While you may not be able to control everything in your environment, you can certainly control your reaction. Fifth successful people avoid distractions. Our world is full of distractions and temptations that can sabotage even the best intentions. Recognize what these distractions and temptations are. Does seeing an ad for chocolate cake send you to the kitchen? Recognize this as a distraction and rewire your brain to react differently. If you see chocolate cake, visualize yourself in the new outfit as you reach for a tall glass of water. Acknowledge the distraction and mentally reward yourself for being in control of your reaction. Avoiding distractions is a technique that works with any goal. Five steps. Some might say they are easy or simple. It takes true commitment and determination to stay motivated to achieve personal success. These principles are the same ones that every successful person employs daily. They set goals, measure against the goals, visualize goal attainment, re-wire their thinking, and avoid distractions. Following these steps takes practice and persistence. If you find that you have stumbled along the way, not to worry. Each day brings a new opportunity to start over. With practice, you will find yourself having fewer lapses over time. To your goal attainment!
