Many people spend thousands of dollars on a new piano but then neglect to care for it properly

. This disregard can damage their piano and cost them even more money. A piano that is not taken care of is not something that will promote the enjoyment and cultivation most people hoped would result from the purchase of the instrument. Luckily, some basic steps can obviate this consequence. Proper polishing, cleaning, and tuning of your piano will keep it looking and sounding brand new and can therefore change the environment of your home.

Regular cleaning and dusting is the best thing you can do to keep your piano in prime condition. To remove dust, use a feather duster and not a dry cloth as this will cause the dust to scratch the piano's finish. The same goes for rags or paper towels. If you must use a soft cloth, dampen it slightly with filtered water. Be very gentle and dry promptly with a different cloth. Do not dust the interior of the piano. These fragile parts must be professionally cleaned.

You can and should, however, clean the piano keys. Again, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with filtered water and mild soap. Don't use chemicals or furniture polish. Wipe towards you to prevent water from getting in between them. Work on one octave at a time, drying as you go. Colored cloths can bleed onto the white keys, so avoid these. In the same vein, clean the black keys last, or use a different cloth, so that no black paint is accidentally passed onto the white keys.

Polishing your piano with the right technique is another easy way to prevent damage. The best thing to do is polish rarely, if at all. Dusting regularly is a better alternative. But if your piano must be polished be extremely gentle. If the finish on your piano is lacquer (most common for pianos in North America), you will need to invest in a good polish, not something intended for common household products. Anything with silicone or lemon oil should be avoided. Do not spray the product directly onto the piano. Rather, spray it on a soft cloth while standing a good three feet away. Wipe in the direction of the grain and use the lightest pressure on corners and edges. If you encounter a sticky spot, use water and soap to remove it. Dry the area straightaway.

Polishing a polyester or polymer finish requires a similar approach. Do not use high-gloss products or anything with alcohol or silicone, and polish in the direction of the grain. However, a polyester finish should rarely require polishing as it is more scratch-resistant. Simply dusting it will cause its natural shine to return.

Perhaps the most essential thing you can do is have your piano tuned regularly, ideally four times a year. The piano is a stringed instrument and, as such, must be tuned. The more regularly it is played, the more regularly it should be tuned. Letting your piano go without being tuned will not only damage it, it will also cause your tuning bill to increase. No piano, no matter how infrequently it is used, should go a year without a tuning. Most people don't want to pay the fee, but waiting will only cost you more money in the long run. Additionally, listening to someone play a piano, or any instrument for that matter, that is out of tune is a painful experience. If you want your home to be a musical sanctuary, this is key. Regular piano tuning truly makes a new haven of your home.
