Making A Decision That Will Project You Into The Future
As people progress in life, it becomes their responsibility to make choices that will make life what they want it to be
. Your parents are no longer responsible for what you want or what you do with your life. To avoid making decisions that one will regret later on, there is need to seek advice from those people who are thought to be more experienced than you are. Once you have been advised and you have collected as many facts as you can in regard to the situation, it is time to sit down with yourself and come up with the most practical decision that suits you.
If the kind of decision you are trying to make is a long-term or a major one, one of the ways in which you may want to test whether the choice you are settling for is the most viable is to project yourself into the future. For example, if you are torn between studying medicine and law, picture yourself four years into the future and see how either of the careers will be affecting you life. Once you have projected a mental future of how the decision will affect you, look back and think how you would have done things or made choices differently.
Now bring yourself back to the present and go by that mental future. Working with a mental picture may not be easy, thus you really need to be honest and unbiased. Arriving at a decision requires that you go through the process of problem analysis. Many people hardly can tell between the two processes, but they are completely different from each other as one leads to the other. In the problem analysis process, the situation or the obstacle that is hindering the smooth running of things must first be identified.
The problem is that factor that is causing mental discontent and which is stimulating the urgency to arrive at a decision. The problem also causes deviations from what is otherwise considered to be standard performance. Once the problem has clearly been identified, finding a solution to it entails the decision making process. In the decision making process, this is where you must establish what you hope to achieve through that choice you are going to make.
Your goals should be prioritized, such that later on, you will look back and know that you only did what you had to. As you determine which path to follow to arrive at the decision, come up with alternatives. The alternative that seems to be the most likely one to lead you to your goals is most likely the decision you are going to make. However, do not settle here as yet; consider the pros and cons of each of the alternatives you have at hand. The one that gives you the most advantages and least disadvantages is most likely than not the path to follow.
