Building hen houses for your pullets is compulsory if you want to raise the happiest and healthiest pullets. A chicken coop can be quite uncomplicated to make and can be completed in one weekend if a high-quality design is used. The tools and building supplies required are uncomplicated and inexpensive which means you can expect to save some cash by building it on your own. And once completed you can obtain the benefits by raising extremely prolific birds that will make it possible to put fresh and organic eggs and meat on your dinner table.
The first question you need to ask yourself is "how many birds do I want?" The more birds you want, the larger their house must be. Keeping a great number of pullets in a confined area can lead to disease and cannibalism among the birds. All poultry have a pecking order and in overloaded areas some of the chickens can get pecked to death by the stronger birds. See to it that you give them at least 3 square feet per bird while remembering that the more space you provide, the less chance for cannibalism.
In a clean and roomy cage your birds can remain healthy and productive for lots of years. Conversely, if they get overly crowded they will be more at risk to sickness and disease and their production will certainly suffer. Healthy and vigorous poultry lay more eggs so it is important to provide them with a hen house that is sanitary and roomy.
After arriving at a decision pertaining to the quantity of pullets you will be growing and the size of your chicken shed, there are a number of additional issues that should be mulled over. Your hen house will either be built in a stationary location or it can be movable. Portable hen houses can only handle several chickens so if you want to raise a large quantity you should make stationary houses.
If you will be growing approximately 4 to 6 chickens you may want to consider constructing a movable coop, also known as a chicken ark. The big advantage to movable houses is the no-cost food they provide. Your flock can hunt and peck for a portion of their own food. This will help keep them in good health because they will be getting some real live food instead of all pre-packaged. After one area has been cleaned out of insects and plant life it will be easy to transport the housing to a new location teeming with insects and succulent new plant growth.
If you are short on spare time and want to cut back your labor to the smallest amount possible, movable hen houses are ideal. As a substitute to cleaning your coop on a consistent basis you can transport it to a new location. Furthermore, you can drag the movable ark into your garden area and obtain no-cost organic manure.
If you make up your mind to make stationary houses you should place material such as straw or hay on the floor to contain the droppings. Cleaning up will be less of a problem using this method. Another labor saver is to make the chicken pen two or three feet higher than the soil and use chicken wire for the floor. This will keep the interior of the pen clean while making it possible for you to clean up when time permits.
It doesn't matter how many chickens you will be keeping, hen houses are generally necessary if you would like to maintain healthy and thriving pullets. Giving them a sanitary dry house, suitable ventilation, and a decent amount of room can help your endeavor be a profitable one.About the Author:
