If you want to throw your hat into the ring of legitimate online businesses

, here's the first step: commit yourself to getting rich slowly. Shortcuts are for the short sighted. You might make some quick cash with some cheap and easy scams and schemes, but you will not find a sustainable means of making money with this short-term mentality. So give up on getting rich quick and commit yourself to earning money the hard way, which means doing three important things:

1. Earn Attention

Forget money, it's attention that's hard to come by on the internet. Anyone can put something on the web that might or might not take off, everyone has the chance to become very popular overnight, but because it's so competitive, it's harder than ever to seize on that attention. You're no longer one of two or three newspapers in your town, you're one of millions of blogs on the web. Earning attention isn't easy.

Luckily, there's a reliable, if not quite easy way to win that attention.

2. Find Your Niche

Finding your niche is one of the most important parts of being successful in your chosen field. The smaller your niche the better, just so long as it can sustain what you do. If you can market to a niche of 12 people and still have enough money to keep the lights on at the end of the month, do so, because it's a lot easier to keep 12 people happy than it is to keep a market of tens of thousands of people happy.

3. Build Trust

Make big promises and keep them. If you want to build a legitimate business opportunity for yourself, this is the only way to do it: make big promises and keep them, and over-deliver when you can. Going back to that example of a small niche, let's consider what will happen if you break a promise to even one of those 12 customers. You're not out one customer, you're very likely out 12 customers, because they're going to talk.

Assume that everything you do, both good and bad, is going to be shared with everyone to whom it's relevant. Treat every customer like your favorite customer and keep your promises and your reputation as an honest and reliable person will spread.

If you want to make money on your own terms then there is such a thing as luck, but the only means of making money that works in the long run is getting rich slowly. The shortcuts only get you so far.
