The process isolates an aisle completely and keeps it cold at all times. Hot air outside the aisle is dragged through a refrigeration unit and passed into the cold aisle so servers are maintained at an even temperature throughout.

In its most extreme form, data centre cooling will use an array of cold aisles, separated with thickly vinyl curtains to keep the cold air in. There will be no lights and where possible no human traffic. This kind of data centre cooling option is known as dark or blind data centre design and is used in major industrial installations where thousands of servers all compete for energy and heat loss.

Modern servers can to a large extent be diagnosed and treated remotely allowing for a completely sealed data centre environment with extraordinary precise temperature control. An array of automatic monitoring units keep a close eye on acceptable temperature ranges, alerting remote support desks immediately a server strays outside its range for too long.

As data needs increase and we await the next quantum leap in terms of processing and delivery capacity, our need for robust data centre cooling solutions will also rise. Its important to keep on top of the situation.
