Small spaces can feel confining but when you're renting your very first apartment you might not get all the room that you want right away

There are several good ways to give the illusion that your no fee apartment is bigger than it is. First, try to use monochromatic paint schemes on your walls and dcor. Brighter colors like white, light mint green, yellow, and lavender are great for making your space appear bigger. You can break up an all white room by adding colored furniture, but do it carefully. Over coloring your small apartment can actually make it look smaller!

Another tip to give the appearance of a spacious living arrangement is to decorate using mirrors. You should also consider your curtains. Try making them hang from floor to ceiling to give the illusion of large windows. This all has to do with light. A brightly lit room full of natural sunlight will seem larger than a darker room or one that is lit with fluorescent bulbs. Try to use softly lit wall sconces near those mirrors you're using to make the room seem bigger more than it really is.

Try to make all of your spaces multifunctional. Use your kitchen table for prepping food, as an office table, and as an eating space. This means that you don't have to have a separate space for all of these tasks. If your no fee apartment rental is a studio, try using a futon or a pull out couch as a space to entertain during the day and then turn it into your bedroom at night.

Make sure you plan ahead when you're looking at storage spaces. If you live in a studio apartment, make sure there are at least one or two closets. You don't want to have to look at that box of Christmas ornaments under the coffee table all year long.

Staying organized is vital to keeping your small apartment from feeling overcrowded. Put everything back in its place when you're finished with it. It's hard to use a table for eating, prepping, and office work when it's covered in papers, dishes, and other various items. This can get out of hand in a hurry so make sure you keep on top of your messes.
