Managing Waste with Six sigma
Six Sigma is often considered as a concept that is associated with quality control only. Thus it may sometimes be confused to be a foray of the quality control department only. Six Sigma is a concept that is associated with the whole organization and affects the whole organization. As individuals are more prone to concentrate on the quality of the final product only; a six sigma leader has to be very particular about checking all the aspects that are involved in the organization or a particular process to be included under the preview of Six Sigma.
One aspect of operations that Six Sigma is very good at identifying is waste. The black belts trained in this system will look for the indirect costs of doing business that are unnecessarily adding to the bottom line and sabotaging profits. The training involves finding things like wasted employee effort, unnecessary down time, and manufacturing processes that are more complicated than they need to be. All of these things add to the cost of doing business, and when controlled, can add to your profits.
Thus Waste management forms a part of your profit earning and goes beyond the traditional methodology of selling off waste to a waste dealer or to a scrap dealer. Waste management becomes a part of the organization culture and you are managing waste beyond the traditional methods. The waste may be a wasteful activity like filing of a unnecessary document or making of a unnecessary report by an employee.
All final products have to be such that the customer is satisfied beyond expectations. The constant effort of the whole organization has to be to move towards the six sigma level from the earlier level that the organization is on.
Once six sigma is implemented in an organization all pre conceived notions are thrown out and the whole organization works in a manner which takes it towards the achieving the six sigma level. No matter what methodology good or bad is being implemented before the introduction of six sigma all have to be thrown out. Thus Six Sigma cannot exist in isolation the whole organization has to be involved along with all the processes.
