Because contacts are by default, stored in alphabetical order, you can scroll along the right hand edge of the screen and a large icon with the current letter will appear. This updates in real time so you can quickly find a contact based on the first letter of their contact details.

The Smart Dial feature is also included with the HTC One S. This has a search bar which allows you to start typing a contacts name and this will then be updated in real time after every character you enter. This filters your contacts based on the characters you have entered, making it possible to find the contact you want within a couple of seconds.
