Mantralayam- A Quaint Pilgrimage Centre

Mantralayam is a holy pilgrimage centre situated at the border of the states of Andhra

Pradesh and Karnataka that is known for housing the samadhi of a renowned saint Raghavendra Teertha. Visited mostly by devotees and disciples of this saint, Mantralayam is a tiny and serene village.

This beautiful religious centre is situated by the banks of the river Tungabhadra and is thronged by Vaishnavites, who are devotees of Hindu god Lord Vishnu. Among the major attractions of the region are the Raghavendra Swamy Temple and the Mutt complex. Raghavendra Swamy was a popular Madhava saint who was believed to be the incarnation of a Hindu Mythological character called Bhakta Prahlada, a young boy who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. Young Prahlada was fathered by an evil man who had a boon from the Gods that he could not be killed by either man or beast, during day or night, on heaven or earth. This boon made this man challenge god himself and taunted his young son regarding his faith. To put an end to his evilness, Lord Vishnu appears in the form of Narasimha (one half man and one half lion) and kills the man.

The humanitarian saint Raghavendra Teertha Swami was a great scholar and a staunch believer of Lord Vishnu who enjoys a large following even till date. This saint is believed to have performed many miracles during his lifetime. Devotees mostly come here for a darshan of the Brindavan of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy. Thronged by devotees all through the year, Mantralayams main attraction the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is renowned for its brilliant temple architecture that has a number of inscriptions, structures and paintings all around it. The calm and serene ambience of this temple is very inviting and is open for visitors from 6 to 8am, 10am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm every day. The main deity in this temple is taken around the temple in an adorned chariot on special occasions. These adorned chariots come in three types, golden, silver and wooden. An interesting sight here is of temple elephants paying worship to the deity. Other places of interest near Mantralayam are Panchamukhi temple, Venkateswara temple and picturesque Alampur. Navabrindavana and Hampi are also located nearby.

Mantralayam can be easily reached by rail and road. The railway head closest to this destination is Mantralayam Road. Apart from trains, buses also are a good option to reach Mantralayam from towns such as Adoni, Yemmiganur, Kurnool, Raichur and Bellary.

Mantralayam has a number of hotels around the mutt where tourists and devotees can find comfortable accommodation. The best time to visit Mantralayam is during winters when the weather is pleasant.
