Mantralayam - The Holy Land Of The Hindus

Mantralayam is a holy town of the Hindus that lies by the banks of the River Thungabhadra in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh

. It is also known as Manchale and is bordered with the neighboring state of Karnataka.

The land of Mantralayam is considered to be sacred because of the presence of the holy Vrindavana where the Madhwar Saint Guru Raghavendra Swamy is supposed to have lived and is believed to be still living for another 360 years or so.

Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy, who lived from1601 to 1671, was an influential saint in Hinduism. He advocated Vaishnavism, the worshipping of Lord Vishnu as the supreme God, and Dvaita philosophy advocated by Sri Madhwacharya. He is considered to be a reincarnation of Prahallada, the devotee who was saved by Lord Vishnu, in his avatar of Narasimha. Shri Raghavendra Swami is said to have performed many miracles during his lifetime and is believed to continue to bless his devotees.

Manchalamma is the presiding deity of the Manchale village and one has to offer prayers to Manchalamma before they enter Sri Raghavendra Swamiji's mutt to get his blessings. The shrine of Manchalamma is located on the left of Sri Raghavendra Swami Mutt and both are on the banks of River Tunghabadra.

Raghavendra Swamy temple and the Mutt complex are the main pilgrim and tourist attractions here. But most people here are believers and not sightseers. Pilgrims can witness chariots with the deity being drawn around the temple and the temple elephants paying courtesy to the deity. It is quite a spectacular sight to see the three chariots, one plated in gold, the other in silver and the third in sandalwood. The Thungabhadra River that flows behind the temple is also a main place of attraction in Mantralayam.

It is mandatory to wear Indian attires like dhoti by men and sari by women who want to have a darshan or even to enter the Vrinadavan. Before entering the sanctum it is advisable to take a dip in the Thungabhadra River or at least wash the feet on the banks of the River.

Millions of devotees come to Mantralayam to have a glimpse of the Vrindavan every year. Mantralayam is a small town and was renovated completely after the flood in the Thungabhadra River in 2009. Almost all the sites in Mantralayam can be covered on foot.

Mantralayam is situated at about 250 km away from the state capital, Hyderabad. The nearest railway station is at Mantralayam road which is at a distance of 16 km away from Mantralayam. Regular bus services are available to reach Mantralayam from different parts of Andhra Pradesh. Mantralayam is well-connected to all parts of India via rail, road and air.
