Poultry can be raised in transportable (portable) chicken arks, permanent hen houses, or permitted to survive outdoors with no housing at all. All varieties of living arrangements have unique advantages, but previous to choosing what type is most ideal for you it is wise to consider a few factors first. If you wish to grow more hens than this you can make a larger hen house to keep your flock safe from predators.

Hen houses, also known as chicken coops, have several advantages over movable chicken pens, the most apparent being that you have the extra space to raise more hens. The minimum space requirements per bird will be around 3 square feet. This means that a 50 square foot chicken house (5 feet wide by 10 feet long) can house about 16 birds. With production-bred white leghorns you can expect to gather around 14 eggs every day. This will most likely be more than enough for a small backyard chicken grower.

Another advantage of a hen house is their size. They can provide your hens more area which is critical. Exceedingly crowded birds have a predisposition for pecking each other, also identified as cannibalism among the flock, which can in due course lead to death. Giving your hens a little extra space can prevent this source of concern.

The greatest chicken coops will have two separate areas; a framed wood house and an exterior caged area. The indoor section is where the feeders, waterers, and nest boxes will be placed. Providing water for your hens in a permanent hen house can be automatic because the water fountains can get their water from a nearby faucet.
