Many Google Places Pages Are Incomplete
I've been going through a Lot of Google Places Pages lately and I am noticing a couple of things.
A lot more of the top seven places on the map are now claimed. That's a big improvement over the past two months. Last December there were a lot of niches in which almost no one had claimed a page. Now I think there are several reasons for that.
Google has been actively mailing businesses about the pages, although much of that appears to be to promote the tags they would like people to buy. Can't blame them. Google has invested significant money and resources into this dramatic transformation of their business. Google has slipped the Yellow Pages the final knockout punch. It may not be obvious to everyone yet, but Google is the New Yellow Pages, and will eventually be a better one with pictues and videos as well as text ads. Just think of all the paper that won't be wasted as a result. Environmentalists everywhere should be celebrating.
Second and most significant, people who claim their pages, get preferential treatment. I've noted a few exceptions where unclaimed name sites are still beating out lesser known cites that have claimed their page. But its clear that the mere fact that one has taken the time to claim their page is being rewarded with grat visibility for local searches.
This also makes sense. Google wants people to set up their pages and so those who do benefit from being seen on the top. If you are in a local business, you really want to take actioin today to get in on the early mover advantage. The increased visibility can only mean more customers and profits.
But while I see that a lot more businesses have claimed their pages, I see that very few have taken the time to fill out their listings fully. Just as claiming a page will help you get to the first page if no one else has claimed their page in your niche and market, those who take the time to fill out their listing fully will benefit by getting listed above those who do a token job of it.
What is a 100% listing? Google wants you to fill out virtually everything. They even give you a percenatge grade when you do your editing so you know how close you are. They want as much information as possible. Google's goal is to make these as user friendly as possible and as such they want to give the person searching for a local business as much information as they can. Those businesses who cooperate and provide a lot of information will be featured, those who provide less will be shown lower down in the listings.
It used to be expensive to put pictures in a Yellow Pages listing. It's not online and Google wants you to dress up your listing with pictures and videos as well. You need to completely fill out the photo slots to get a complete listing so make sure that you do. Even if at first you don't have the best possible pictures, fill in all the slots. You can always swap in better pictures later. Google owns YouTube and loves videos in general. While you can upload up to 4 videos now, you must do at least one to be fully complete. Short and simple is fine. It doesn't need to be a Hollywood production.
Claiming your page is the first priority, but when doing so be sure to fill in your lsiting as completely as possible. There is more to the Google places game than completion, but at the current state of the art that will be enough in many niches and markets.
