, the differences between these two ranges much more than the customary distinction in their methods. In a wider sense, marketing is a collection of various processes which help to increase the sale of products or services. One of the various processes is public relations.
Both of them are powerful tools at the hand of a business organization. In simple words, marketing is concerned with what you tell your customers about yourself, while PR is concerned with what your customers think about you. Thus it can be said the primary function of marketing is to create an awareness of the product, while the primary function of public relations is to deal with the public perception of the company. Both are essentially promotion in case of marketing, the product gets promoted while in PR, the company itself gets promoted. Marketing strategies are aimed at making the product look appealing to the customers. Public relation strategies are aimed to ensure that the company always enjoys a good reputation in the minds of the customers.
A marketing strategy begins with a clear understanding of the consumer's requirements and expectations. But PR plays a major role in understanding and measuring the consumer response to a particular marketing strategy. This helps the marketing team as well to change their strategy, if required or to improve on their strategies the next time. The
Public Relations team in also responsible to gauge the consumer's mindsets which might provide useful information to create effective marketing strategies. The effectiveness of marketing strategies is measured by the profit generated. Measuring the effectiveness of the Public Relations strategies is difficult as all the strategies are aimed towards increasing the reputation of the firm which a plays a huge part in ensuring a profitable future.
Marketing is a traditional concept of business, which has been followed in various forms from the earliest times. Compared to the age-old use of marketing, public relations is relatively a newer concept. Though public relations has been used since the dawn of men and their realization that reputation can benefit them, a disciplined study and practicing of it started few decades back. Finally, it must be noted that marketing strategies have a very short life cycle which needs to be improved, adapted and changed. PR on the other hand is a continuous investment, practiced with a long-term vision.
