Known for their astounding splendor and amazing environment, these falls are the tallest of all the man-made waterfalls in the world and are regarded to be one of the highest in the entirety of Europe.

The Marmore falls have an age-old history that dates back to the times of the ancient Romans. They were created as a result of the efforts of a Roman consul named Curius Dentatus. Initially, the Velino River was too large and surrounded the city of Rieti. With the course of time, it had created stagnant waters that were swampy and unhealthy. This eventually became the birthplace of many deadly diseases such as Malaria. To protect the city, the Roman consul ordered the construction of a canal so the stagnant waters can be directed towards the cliffs of Marmore thereby falling into the river of Nera that flowed below.

But, fate had its own plans. The canal, which was thought to be a permanent solution for the stagnant waters created more of problems. Whenever there was a flood in the Velino River, the city of Terni was highly affected as it had its roots along the Nera. Many tried to find a solution but all the efforts were in vain. Finally, in the year 1787, an architect from Terni, Andrea Vici made an oblique cut on a rock to deviate the fall of water and ensure a better flow of the Nera. This resulted in a complete modification of the water falls giving them the look they have today.

Of all the Italy tourist attractions, the falls of Marmore have been continuously occupying a special place. Since ages, they have been a source of inspiration for poets, artists and many other creative minds. The falls also serve as a thriving ground for many of the electric, electro-chemical and metal-working industries of Terni.
