Insulation is used in different fields. Different areas use different kinds of insulator. The most common insulation measure is the rubber covering on copper wires used in wirings and connections. By insulating the wires, electricity flows through the wires encapsulated by the insulation so that the people handling it will not be electrocuted. Hardware stores sell copper wires with different insulation levels. Some have a thick coating of nylon while others are coated with rubber. Some have also developed a new kind of insulation coating to suit the budget. The thickness of insulation needed to cover the wires is dependent on the thickness of the wires being covered. The insulator needs to be able to withstand the electricity that will flow through it; otherwise it fails in protecting people.

Another form of insulation is the covering used on pot and pan handles so that the heat does not go through the aluminum pan and cause damage when skin makes contact with it. Pots are usually made with aluminum or steel, which are known conductors. Conduction and convection are needed where cooking is concerned because they enable the food to be cooked. Usually the handles of these cooking materials are covered with high class rubber or polyethylene so that the cook can hold the pot without being hurt.

Paint is another form of insulation although it is only applied thinly. It is a secondary type of insulator that can be used with different insulators for security reasons. Wood is also another strong insulator that prevents both heat and electricity from penetrating.
