Sounds too good to be true, right? But you can't go to a mall or grocery store without seeing motorized carts and powerized wheelchairs all over the place.

And those TV commercials aren't cheap. They wouldn't run the commercials if they couldn't deliver, right?

To qualify for MAE (mobility assistive equipment), also known as a scooter, you must meet the following.

Have a health condition where you need help with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, getting in or out of the bed or chair, moving around, or using the bathroom

Be able to safely operate and get on and off the wheelchair or scooter

Have good vision

Be mentally able to safely use a scooter, or have someone with you who can make sure the device is used correctly and safely

The equipment also must be useful within the physical layout of your home (it must not be too big for your home or blocked by things in its path).

Also, never order anything unless your doctor has prescribed it. Your doctor must carefully document your need before the device is covered by Medicare and your supplement plan.

If you qualify, your MAE is a covered expense under Medicare Part B. Medicare will pay 80% of the Medicare approved amount after you have satisfied your Part B deductible ($162 in 2011) and you pay the remaining 20%.
