Because the island of Bali is a pocket of Hindu religion and culture, every aspect of Balinese life is suffused with religion.

Balinese Hinduism, which has its roots in Indian Hinduism and in Buddhism, and adopted the animistic traditions of the indigenous people, is said to be deeply interwoven with art and ritual.

The origins of the Balinese came from 3 different waves of immigrants. The first wave came from Java and Kalimantan in the prehistoric times of the proto-Malay stock; the second came slowly over the years from Java during the Hindu period; while the third and final wave came between the 15th and 16th centuries from Java. It is said that at the time of Javas conversion into Islam, aristocrats fled to Bali from the Javanese Majapahit Empire to escape Islamic conversion, reshaping the Balinese culture into a syncretic form of classical Javanese culture with many Balinese elements.

Unlike most of Muslim-majority Indonesia, there are about 93.18% of Bali's population that adhere to Balinese Hinduism Hindu Dharma, formed as a combination of existing local beliefs and Hindu influences from mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia.

Culturally and linguistically, the Balinese are thus said to be closely related to the peoples of the Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Oceania.

Nowadays, the Balinese society continues to revolve around each family's ancestral village, to which the cycle of life and religion is closely tied.
