Meet Wild Animals in South Africa
Do you like to travel? Have you had it before
? South Africa is widely regarded as one of the most perfect spot to take travel. I traveled to South Arica alone after selling my
wholesale electronics shop last year after months of plan, because I really need a good rest and relaxation. I found I fell in love with this natural beauty and do not want to go back. Believe it or not! I like to enjoy the free and primitive way of living in the nature and get the most comfortable relaxation away from the noisy city. Hired a car, I started my 7-day travel around with my camera, MP3 player and
fm transmitter, and visited almost the wild animals. Now I want to share my experience of meeting different wild animals with you. The most famous animals are called Big Five'. Big Five' was originated among the hunters of a bygone era to describe not the largest of the animals which they hunted, but the most dangerous ones. They are buffalo, rhinoceros, lion, elephant and leopard. Each of these Big Five animals has a reputation for pursuing its attacker with intent to kill. Perhaps buffalo is the most persistent one, which will ceaselessly pursue his aggressor, making hunting a life-or-death experience for the hunted and the hunter! Rhinoceros, a large, primitive looking mammal, in fact dates back to the Miocene era millions of years ago. In recent decades rhinos have been to the point of near extinction as a result of hunting. Lions are the second largest members of the feline family in the world. Lion are tan in color and have a slightly white under-body, with a tuft of black hair at the end of their tails. Lions do not live a fundamentally solitary existence like other cats species. It has developed a social system based on teamwork and a division of labor within the pride, and an extended but closed family unit centers around a group of related females. The average pride consists of about 15 individuals, including five to 10 females with their young and two or three territorial males that are usually brothers or pride mates. African elephant is the largest living land mammal, one of the most impressive animals on earth. The Elephant's muscular trunk serves as a nose, hand, extra foot, signaling device and a tool for gathering food, siphoning water, dusting, digging and a variety of other functions. The long trunk permits the elephant to reach as high as 23 feet. It is capable of powerful twisting and coiling movements used for tearing down trees or fighting. Leopard is the most secretive and elusive of the large carnivores in South Africa, which is the strongest climber of the larger cats and is capable of killing prey far larger than itself. The coloring of the leopard varies from white to bright golden brown, spotted with black spots and rosettes. The rosettes consist of groups of 5 to 6 spots arranged in a tight ring. Its tail is longer than half the body length measured from head to tail. This fierce animal has small round ears and long whiskers growing from dark spots on the upper lip. The size of the leopard varies considerably. The leopard differs from the cheetah in having shorter legs, and rosette-like spots and is without the cheetah's black "tear" marks from eye to mouth. Fortunately, I saw the five animals and took a lot of photos in my camera; what's more, I obtained the knowledge about wild animals and special experience in South Africa.
