Should Your Dog Have Its Own Bed?
You bring your cute, fun loving puppy home for the first time so of course you want your dog to sleep with you
. Few things are better than a little snuggly dog to cuddle up with. But, realistically, letting your dog sleep with you is not good for either you, or the dog. Your dog really needs its own bed, and you should reinforce the correct behavior from the beginning.
While you might enjoy it in the beginning, you might change your mind when your dog is fully grown and 100 lbs. Especially if the dog was adopted from the pound, it might prefer having its own space. Your dog might actually prefer to have a place it can think of as its own, which feels safe to it.
You should also consider medical reasons. If you get your dog used to sleeping in one spot he's less likely to sleep on the floor or another hard surface which can cause arthritis and calluses in later years. Starting out correctly can help keep your dog fit and healthy. They even make orthopedic dog beds now to help address this very issue.
Now that we have established that a dog bed is essential, what type do you get? It depends on your dog and his preferences. The bed should be big enough to be comfortable for your dog. Even if it's a perfect fit for your house and matches the decor, it's really important that your dog can lay down in the bed. Otherwise, your dog might never choose to use it.
Especially when it comes to puppies it is essential to choose a bed that is chew proof. It's easy to find a wide range of beds - indoor and outdoor, for car and travel, heated and not heated, and even orthopedic ones for older animals. Select one that fits your dogs needs and lifestyle.
It's important that the bed is machine washable. You will need to keep both your dog and the bed clean regularly. Fleas are a major consideration too and cedar shavings can help stop them becoming permanent residents.
Following these simple guidelines can ensure that both you and your dog will get the rest you deserve.
