Unless your first date is taking place at a black-tie function or a Michelin starred restaurant, it really is unlikely that you'll be expected to turn up as if you'd just been turfed off a red carpet. In fact, dress up too much and you'll seem over eager, dress down too much and you'll seem as if you're not at all bothered with going on this date.

This is where the realm of the smart casual comes in. And it's a tad more involving than just lumping a pair of Brogues with your jeans when you go out, but does make use of men's suits.

A jacket approach

Now, should you be heading off for a film at your local cinema and a bite to eat, this is where you'll want to be dressed down, but suave and smart at the same time. Now you can either take a jacket from a suit you own that does fit you, or go with a blazer, and you then wear this with either a pair of dark, straight legged jeans. However, a pair of corduroys, not too baggy, in a shade of brown - so long as the jacket is not brown - would also be a tasty alternative to jeans.

Choosing which kind of shirt to wear is the slightly tricky part. A really dressed down look would be achieved by wearing a normal t-shirt that fits you well. Stepping up from the t-shirt would be to wear a polo-neck t-shirt. Further still, you could wear a thin jumper, one that won't irritate you. The touch that leaves you just at the top of seriously suave understated style would be to wear a casual shirt with the top two buttons undone, and preferably un-tucked if the shirt won't be hanging past your rear.

A suited approach

If you're heading off to a restaurant that doesn't have a specific dress code, but does tend to bring in a higher class of clientele then you need to wear a suit. Don't worry, you won't need to half-strangle yourself with a tie, but you do need to spend some time putting the outfit together.

The overall aim with wearing a suit on the first date is to not look as if you've just come from the office, which means no pinstripes. Beyond pinstripes, go for a suit in a dark blue, light or dark grey, light or dark brown and the jacket must have notched lapels. As this is a smart casual look you don't need to pick up a tie, but you will need to pay attention to your choice of shirt. You could wear a white shirt, but choosing a patterned or coloured shirt that doesn't contrast with your suit will look like you've made far more of an effort.

Final Touch - The Shoes

The shoes you choose to go with either combination is important. Avoid trainers for the jacket approach, and instead concentrate on pairing up a pair of black or brown leather shoes or boots with either look. You want to keep the shoes elegant, but not too detailed. When you're of a slender figure, you'll want shoes with a reasonably narrow toe, and even if you're broadly built you don't want to go with shoes that look clunky when put together with the rest of your outfit.
