The three most critical signs suggestive of the early on set of meningitis are a high fever/ temperature, neck stiffness and altered mental state which results in a patient being confused and disorientated.

This is a contagious disease, but it does not spread easily. It is transmitted through respiratory secretions, such as through kissing or coughing. Casual contacts are not at risk. However, family members, roommates, day care contacts may need antibiotics if they were in close contact with a meningitis patients.

Aseptic meningitis in dogs is also sometimes referred to as sterile meningitis, and is a condition that affects the layers lining your pets brain but there are no bacterial, fugal, or viral infections present. The term aseptic is slightly confusing with this disease, as it implies that there is a lack of infection altogether. However, there is a growing consensus in the medical community that viral infections or mycobacteria may indeed be present; they are just not detected in routine examinations.

Viral meningitis is caused by enteroviruses, as the name implies. Highly infectious, the disease is spread easily through secretions of the nose and mouth. Three to seven days is the incubation period of the virus, starting with the infection through to the appearance of the first symptoms. Once infected with the virus causing meningitis, contagious people can spread the virus for a number of days; up to around 10 days after first developing symptoms.

Hib meningitis the form of meningitis caused by the haemophilus influenzae type B bacterium. This form of meningitis is particularly dangerous to children, and was the form which caused most deaths to under fives from meningitis, particularly those between the ages of 3 to 36 months. Due to the Hib vaccine it is now very rare in developed countries, though has not yet been eradicated.

Microbe meningitis is generally characterized by neutrophilic pleocytosis (predominance of polymorphonuclear neutrophils in the cerebrospinal fluid). Typical causes of lymphocytic pleocytosis include viral infections (eg, enterovirus, West Nile virus), fungal infections (eg, cryptococcus in HIV-infected persons), and spirochetal infections (eg, neurosyphilis or Lyme neuroborreliosis).
