Methods to permanently delete files

The usage of various methods for deleting files has been in use for a long time. In the pre computer age, where majority of the data storage happened on paper files and folders, offices and sometimes even individuals made use of the paper shredder, a mechanical device which would tear up any document, making it impossible to recreate the document. This was good enough until the computers came into existence. Computers stored data in a digital manner, and hence destroying data on a digital storage media required a more advanced mechanism to delete files.

There was however two mechanisms that were devised to permanently delete files on a digital storage media. The first one among them was the easier one, as it did not include any kind of logical operation. This method was the simple physical destruction of the storage device. This was definitely a very good mechanism to delete files, but the disadvantage with this method was that the storage media would become completely unfit for use if this method was employed.

The second method however included deleting files using a logical method of erasing data. In this method, the data on the storage media was overwritten by new data, i.e., random characters were used for overwriting the data either once or multiple number of times. This way, not only was the data erased permanently, but the storage media could be used again, as it had no physical damage. Most users preferred to go for the second method of data erasure, as they could save money on the storage media.
