Mexico Real Estate and the Lure of Mexican Cuisine
Mexico Real Estate and the Lure of Mexican Cuisine
If you are thinking of buying Mexico real estate, what are your main motivations? Warm weather? Low cost of living? Beautiful beaches? Old colonial cities? What about delicious Mexican food?
So many people love Mexican food, and the traditions are so widespread through the world (especially in the U.S.) that many people forget about this point. The Mexican government did. It was only during the last International Tourism Fair in Spain that representatives of Mexico's tourism industry suddenly realized that this country has one of the world's favourite food cultures, and they weren't doing anything to promote it or use it in their favor.
In fact, this is what the Ministry of Tourism is now going to focus on - creating a unique brand of food culture (the culture already exists, its the international brand that needs developing) to promote tourism to Mexico from around the world. This goal will be an integral part of Mexico's designation of 2011 as the country's "Year of Tourism."
The good news for you is that, as someone who is actually going to buy Mexico real estate and live down here most of the year, you will be able to enjoy delicious Mexican food whenever you want it. Even better, it's always cheap. Everything from tacos and tortas to delicious seafood dishes and fresh fruit juices or smoothies are available everywhere.
Mexican food also changes from region to region. The food in the Yucatan area, including Playa del Carmen, Cancun and Merida, is distinctly different from the more popularly known dishes from the central region around Mexico City, which is again different from the Pacific Coast or the north of the country.
The good part is that many of the favorite expat communities, like Puerto Vallarta or Playa del Carmen, bring together a blend of items from different regions, with workers moving to these areas from all parts of the country. One clear example of this are tamales; in Playa del Carmen, you could easily have a choice of 5 or more different types of tamales, with different fillings and sauce within each kind. Price? $1 each. Complete Mexican meals in local restaurants, that come with a drink can be found for $3. (It's called "comida corrida," or "fast food" but it's much more like a home cooked meal than American fast food.) Of course, more elegant versions, and even gourmet, can also be found for prices much lower than you might imagine.
