Miami Dolphins Tickets - Fins' Future Looking Good
When Chad Pennington went down with a shoulder injury that will sideline him for
the remainder of the 2009 NFL season, most people wrote off the Miami Dolphins' season. They were 0-3 when it was found that Pennington was done for the year and most people figured that Miami Dolphins tickets would only be good for seeing the player that's been viewed as team's quarterback of the future, Chad Henne, get some reps. Henne appears to be more ready than expected, though, and the Dolphins headed into their bye week at 2-3, coming off two consecutive divisional wins against Buffalo and New York.
The Dolphins eased Henne into the starting role against Buffalo in Week 4, not asking him to do much or throw the ball down field often, but it was a different story the following week. Henne did everything the coaching staff asked him to do to against the Jets and more, completing 20 of his 26 pass attempts for 241 yards and two touchdowns, good for a 130.4 passer rating. Henne wasn't coddled against New York the way he was against Buffalo. He made deep throws and had to make quick reads against the Jets' blitz-heavy defensive scheme. Henne showed off his big arm on a long touchdown pass to Ted Ginn, used his quick decision-making to hit players on screens and slants when pressured and really showcased his cannon of an arm on one particular pass to Greg Camarillo on the game's final drive.
Henne not only showed the physical skills that made him a second-round pick in 2008, but he showed that his understanding of the game is advanced for his level of pro experience. That bodes very well for the future of this franchise. It was thought that Henne would get the starting nod next season, but it seems like a blessing that it's happened now. The Dolphins look like they can be competitive this season while building for the future. This offense still depends heavily on the Wildcat formation, but Henne's growth could make that less of a necessity as time goes on.
Henne has some good offensive players to grow up with. Ted Ginn is a budding receiver that is trying to become more than just a deep threat. He's shown flashes of his big play ability, which could become more common thanks to Henne's arm strength. Protecting Henne's blind side is offensive tackle Jake Long, the first overall pick in the 2008 draft. He has the tools to become an elite tackle in the NFL. The team's star running back, Ronnie Brown, is still only 27 years old and doesn't have a ton of mileage on his tires. He could last for a while in this league if he stays healthy, something that has proved to be a challenge for the Auburn product.
The team's defense has its share of playmakers as well, and a good mix of veterans and youngsters. The defense will eventually make the transition to more of the younger guys, which will show why Bill Parcels is one of the premier talent evaluators in the game.
The Dolphins should be competitive, as they showed they can be in Week 5 against the Jets. Henne is sure to hit some bumps in the road, but he excelled against a good, aggressive New York defense, which certainly bodes well for his future. This team looks to have a bright future ahead of them and fans in Miami should be excited for what the rest of this season holds as well.
